Anal incontinence, the loss of anal sphincter control, leads to the unwanted release of solid or liquid stool or gas. Even when it occurs only occasionally, anal incontinence can have catastrophic consequences on self-confidence, personal image, and the ability to integrate socially and in employment.
There are many causes of anal incontinence, including congenital disorders of the spinal cord or anus; subsequent injuries to the rectum and anus; obstetric injuries during delivery; injury of the spinal cord; diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage); advanced Alzheimer disease or other forms of dementia; fecal impaction; and tumors.
